Attacks on SME's
The vast majority of cyber attacks are not very hi-tech at all. They’re committed by opportunists who are looking for easy targets and who know that most small businesses whose resources are left unguarded on the internet. All it takes is a lost password or an insecure network and you become a target.
But, the good news is that even a basic level of cybersecurity is enough to deter most run-of-the-mill cyber criminals, who will just move on and look for someone else to attack.
NSCS Cyber Essentials
That’s one of the reasons why, over the past year, 2|SEC has been heavily involved with the NSCS’s Cyber Essentials program in an attempt to help small businesses in the Health and Social Care sector as part of the Government COVID-19 response.
NSCS explains that ‘Cyber Essentials is a simple but effective, government-backed scheme that will help you to protect your organisation, whatever its size, against a whole range of the most common cyber attacks.’
Dr Emma Philbott MBE approached 2|SEC at short notice to get involved in the program, and though it was delivered under quite challenging circumstances, we recognised the importance of the work for Britain’s cyber landscape.
We were thrilled to get a big thank you from the NSCS “for all your work to support small businesses in the Health and Social Care sector as part of the Government COVID-19 response”, and to see the results in so many small businesses.
IASME
The program was co-ordinated by the IASME Consortium, which ‘is committed to helping businesses improve their cyber security, risk management and good governance through an effective and accessible range of certifications.’
There are over 250 Certification Bodies in the UK; it’s a vital part of the cybersecurity mix. The Cyber Essentials package provides peace of mind that your defences are protected against the vast majority of common cyber attacks simply because these attacks are looking for targets which do not have the Cyber Essentials technical controls in place.
In addition to basic protection, Cyber Essentials gives ordinary business owners a greater awareness of the risks they face in today’s online environment, and a better understanding of how to manage their cyber security in future.
Having certified IASME status allows you to reassure customers that their data is safe with you, to attract new business who are aware of the threats that are out there, and it is also a requirement if you are planning to compete for certain government contracts.
